Bird care

Zebra finches (Wikipedia article): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zebra_finch

If you decide to get a finch as a pet, you must ensure that you provide your new feathery family member with the best possible life. Finches are not ornaments, and if you don't have time and patience to care for them then it is best to not get any. These little birds are small and delicate, and can provide lots of joy with their beautiful vocalizations and their constant playful activity.

Always DO make sure that your finch has:
  • Clean, fresh drinking water
  • High quality food (more about that below)
  • Clean, fresh bathing water (this is separate from drinking water)
  • Large cage to enable activity (finches are very active and require plenty of space); please make sure that the bar separation is no more than 1/4" to 1/2"
  • Calcium (cuttle bone or similar) or mineral block - this is necessary for your finch to maintain a healthy beak and strong bones
  • Clean cage, clean water and clean food dishes
  • Toys - these include swings and ropes
Food MUST include:
  • Fresh veggies (15%), fresh fruit (5%), fortified pellets and seeds (remove any uneaten veggies or fruit after about 4 hours)
  • Special treats such as scrambled or boiled eggs (no salt), peas and beans - these should comprise about 5% of your finch's diet
Please:
  • Do NOT expose your finch to sudden temperature changes or draft
  • Do NOT give your finch substandard food
  • Do NOT chase your finch or try to capture it - that amount of stress can kill a tiny bird
  • Do NOT let other pets disturb your finch
